The Barista Skills Intermediate course is the second level of the SCA Barista Module and is designed for those who already have basic knowledge and hands-on experience behind the espresso machine and wish to significantly advance their technical skills.

It is the ideal continuation after the Foundation level for any barista who wants to deepen their understanding of extraction, equipment calibration, workflow, and advanced preparation of high-quality beverages.

What You Will Learn

During the seminar, participants gain a deeper understanding of extraction, advanced espresso and cappuccino preparation techniques, and extensive hands-on practice in equipment calibration.

The theoretical and practical training covers all advanced knowledge required by a modern professional barista, including:

• In-depth understanding of espresso extraction parameters
(ratio, time, pressure, temperature)
• Analysis of factors affecting flavor and beverage balance
• Proper grinder adjustment based on coffee, roast profile, and environment
• Maintaining consistent extraction quality throughout the day
• The role of water and its impact on espresso
• Beverage preparation with consistency, speed, and professional workflow (bar management)
• Creating balanced recipes for espresso-based beverages
• The science behind milk: temperature, fats, proteins, and their effect on milk foam
• Advanced steaming and pouring techniques for stable texture and basic latte art patterns
• Time management, organization, and communication behind the bar
• Cleaning, maintenance, and daily care procedures for equipment
• Principles of professionalism, safety, and hygiene in the workplace

Practical Experience

Beyond theory, participants will receive extensive hands-on training, including:

• Multiple grinder adjustments
• Experimentation with extraction parameters
• Extensive practice in espresso and cappuccino preparation
• Workflow exercises for maximum speed, consistency, and accuracy

SCA Certification

After completing the seminar:

Practical Exam
Participants are required to demonstrate their skills in extraction calibration, espresso and cappuccino preparation, and proper workstation management.

SCA Written Exam
The exam is conducted online via the SCA platform and consists of 35 questions.
The required passing score is 70%.

Successful completion leads to the SCA Barista Skills Intermediate Certificate, a significant milestone for any professional in the specialty coffee industry.
